Dear All

A couple of weeks ago I had a phone call from Barry Guess, asking me if my wife Janet and I would like to attend the Sutton & Cheam Motor Club Annual Awards evening as an Honorary Guest.

That evening was held last night at the Puttenham Golf Club near Guildford with about 60-70 invitees. As the awards ceremony began with mine host Barry Guess kicking off the evenings proceedings, with the first of the awards the "Bazza" awards for S&C club members who in some way had made a "cock up" over the past years season along with other various club awards.

Sharing our table for the evening was a face most of us see throughout the year, and that was Gary & Marion Nichols from West Essex Car Club, who as you all know as Chief Timekeeper on most events in the South of England.

Taking to the microphone Ian Brooks (Sutton & Cheam Chairman) set about presenting the Special Recognition Awards of which the first was presented to Gary for his hard work of Timekeeping and work within Motorsport. In fact Gary had been out yesterday morning (Saturday) setting up for an event today (Sunday) at RAF Bentwaters near Ipswich,Suffolk.

Brooksie then moved on to present another Special Recognition Award to an individual from a local motor club whose help is always welcome on Sutton & Cheam Motor Club's events. Unknowingly this award was presented to yours truly, surprised and shocked I accepted this award though why I was chosen I know not.

Various other awards were handed out during the evening, before Barry then turned to one Award that was first allocated some 47 years ago, to be exact 1962.

This award was called The Tempest Award and as he described this award, certain alarm bells started to ring in my head. For he Barry, was explaining about how a certain person(s) were as he put it, working year in year out, in all weathers making sure that, that stage ran no matter what.

As he got to the end of his speech I was completely aghast to find that the person who he was describing was me.

On accepting this award I was under no illusion who this award was meant for, it was for everyone who over the years has helped me run Ash, Warren, Longcross, Castle Combe etc.

So may I say well done to you all and thank you for what you have all done for me and Craven Motor Club over the years.

Phil.
