Marshal registration and grading
In 2002 the MSA (Motor Sports Association) launched the marshals registration scheme, (commonly known as the NMR or the National Marshals Register), this is a scheme whereby marshals can apply to be given a grade that recognises their experience in marshalling.
Introduction to the NMR
This scheme, when it was first introduced had 3 grading levels.
Grade 3 = Entry Level. Grade 2 = More experienced marshal. Grade 1 = Specialist marshal.
The criteria for gaining each grade are shown below:
Grade 3 - Marshals must have marshalled satisfactorily on 3 events and be nominated to the NMR by an MSA recognised club.
Grade 2 - Marshals must have marshalled on a further 3 events (6 in total) and have attended an NMR training event.
Grade 1 - Marshals must be registered grade 2 and attend a more formal modular training scheme.
In 2008 as part of the volunteers in motor sport initiative, a working group proposed a revised grading scheme.
| OLD GRADE | NEW GRADE |
| Grade 1 | Event Marshal |
| N/A | Senior Marshal |
| Grade 2 | Experienced Marshal |
| Grade 3 | Marshal |
| N/A | Trainee |
| N/A | Student/Cadet |
Student
People who have undertaken an MSA endorsed motor sport incident marshal course at college or university, will be credited with their attendance signature for the events at which they have marshalled.
Cadet
A new cadet marshal grade, introduced in 2008, the cadet grade is open to all marshals between their 11th and 16th birthdays, NB. only organising clubs who have an appointed child protection officer may use cadet marshals, on reaching their 16th birthday they then upgrade to trainee marshal.
Maintaining your grade
To maintain an existing grade, marshals should complete a minimum of 4 events a year in that grade and at least 1 training session for that grade every 2 years.
As part of this revision to the scheme, you will now receive a a marshals personal record card, this card gives you the opportunity to record for maintenance upgrade purposes, your attendance signatures at events and training days.
There is also a revised marshal registration form to use when upgrading or if registering as a new marshal. This common form now covers all motorsport marshalling disciplines.
